10 Activities to Defeat at Home Boredom These School Holiday’s

10 Activities to Defeat at Home Boredom These School Holiday’s

So, we’re a few weeks in to the Summer holidays and past the Christmas buzz and excitement and suddenly you are hearing a lot more of the dreaded phrase “I’m bored” from your beautiful angels.. we can relate!

Never fear, we are here to save the day with some ideas to entertain the kids (and yourself) and cut down on the beloved screen time!

We've selected ideas to do at home (thanks, Covid) and that are budget friendly!

1. Hold a cupcake decorating competition

A cupcake decorating competition is a great way to keep little hands entertained as it actually begins before the icing and sprinkles are in their hands thanks to the baking aspect – whether it is a packet mix or from scratch!

Set tasks and make it a learning activity also with measuring ingredients and mixing colours for the icing.

For the competition, have a family member, friend or neighbour make the final decision with the prize being that the winner gets to pick the movie for that night!

2. Paper plane flying contest

Channel energy in to a ‘Flying School’ contest by having everyone make their paper plane of choice – if you have older children, have them do 10 minutes of research in to the best ways to fold and fly paper planes. If you have younger children, have them spend 10 minutes decorating their planes – because we all know, if coloured red, they will go faster!

While the kids are busy with this, make up their targets for practicing. Whether it is as elaborate as the image below, or different areas of the house and back yard with points allocated to them, it will be fun to see who reaches a previously set points tally first!

3. Take on a jigsaw

This one is pretty self explanatory, but you would be surprised how entertaining it can be as a family! Working as a team is great for communication and also means the task will be completed faster, which will keep easily distracted minds entertained!

4. Have a picnic in the backyard

Why not take lunch outside for the day! In the lead up, discuss where your picnic is taking place - and we don't mean on the grass, why not get a world map image and have your kids pick a destination. Then, theme the picnic based on their choice!

Did they pick America? It sounds like hotdogs are on the menu and maybe a game of backyard baseball!

Did they pick France? Croissants or baguettes coming right up!

While you are eating, discuss some interesting facts about the destination that they chose and other places in the world they would love to see and why. You'll be amazed at what little minds imagine!

5. Do some gardening

While we are in the backyard, why not get the kids involved in some gardening with you! Kids love seeing things grow and teaching them about planting, watering and feeding plants will amaze them as well as delight them when they see their seeds transform in to flowers, fruits and vegetables.

6. Create a treasure hunt

One of the simplest ideas that can be as easy or as difficult as you like, depending on the age group.

Gather some items up and write out a list of what is to be found. Have extra kids along for the day? Split them up in to teams and see which team finds more items. The winners can pick the next activity for the day.

7. Write your own book

Children are full of ideas and stories, so why not take the opportunity to write them down.

Explain that there will be a beginning, middle and an end and work through each section together. While you scribe, they can describe the adventure as they see it in their mind.

Once you are done, have them illustrate the pages.

Is someone's birthday coming up? Have them create a story just for that special person as a gift.

8. Make slime

It couldn't be avoided on our list. Kids LOVE slime.

  1. Put 1/2 cup shampoo and 1/4 cup of cornstarch in a bowl.
  2. Mix well.
  3. Add 3 drops of food colouring (optional).
  4. Add 1 tablespoon of water and stir. Slowly add 5 more tablespoons of water, stirring well after each one.
  5. Knead the slime for around 5 minutes.

9. Set up a pom pom race track

Using masking tape, set up a track on your floor (or popsicle sticks work too if you don't have tiles or want to mark the floor), give each kid a straw and a pom pom and let them race! You'll be amazed at how long this can entertain them.. and hubby too once the competitiveness comes out!
